The most beautiful and glamorous women in the world, according to Kelly Phelan, age 6:

(Besides my mom. No, really. I was convinced that my mom was literally the most beautiful woman in the world and that she looked exactly like Barbie. In fact, I used to cut all my Barbies’ hair short so they would look more like my mom.)

(That’s not weird or anything.)

(OK, now that I’ve fulfilled – no, SURPASSED – my Awkward Quota for the day, here we go.)

Wonder Woman

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

Miss Piggy

Lucy Ewing on Dallas

Francesca Annis, a.k.a., Lillie Langtry on PBS Masterpiece Theatre’s Lillie

Um. One of these things is not like the others. To say the least.

(I was a really weird little kid.)

(I know, right? SURPRISE!!1!)

Although I’m proud that I’m limiting Harper’s media exposure, that means her personal style icon at this point is probably Father Phil.

So who were your heroes when you were six?

Your admiring

  1. Lisa

Belle. I had the dress and everything! I mean, she had brown hair like me, liked to read, and wanted adventure in the great wide somewhere. It was a no-brainer.

  2. Cassie

    Debbie Gibson and Paula Abdul.

OH AND I HAD SUCH A CRUSH ON JANET JACKSON UNTIL I WAS THE AGE OF 27.

    What?

  3. Angela

Judging by the wonder woman swimsuit and miss piggy lunch box that I was sporting in many photos…I’d say mine were right in line with yours. I also remember that my dream was to be a designer for jordache.

  4. Jessica R.

That picture of Miss Piggy with cleavage is disturbing!

And the thought of Fr. Phil as Harper’s hero literally made me laugh out loud.

My hero was Lois Lana ala Lois and Clark. I loved that she was a writer! At an even younger age I wanted to be Belle. I loved that she read books, had brown hair, and didn’t care that she was gorgeous.

  5. Serial

YES AND YES to Miss Piggy and Wonder Woman.

I also thought Marcia Brady was the prettiest girl ever. And the Childlike Empress from The Neverending Story. Oh and Jennifer Connely in Labrynth.

And if Miss Piggy counts, so does Smurfette. She was a sexpot.

  6. Lori

    1. Mom
    2. Jaclyn Smith (b/c she looked like my mom, to me anyway.)
    3. Cheryl Ladd
    4. Wonder Woman (I had the Underoos!)
I, too, thought the Cowboys Cheerleaders ruled. One Christmas I got all the signature clothes: jacket, jeans, tee-shirt. I thought I was hot stuff!

  7. Avidchick

Batgirl, my mom, Dolly Parton and Yankee Poodle from the Capt. Carrot comics… yeah, that explains a lot.

  8. Avidchick

Omg, forgot a big one- and the first Romana from Doctor Who. She had this white silk outfit with feathers and I used to steal my parents white satiny sheets so I could wrap it around me and flounce all over te house pretending to be her!

  9. Unapologetically Mundane

I never had any idea Miss Piggy had so much going on under her dress. That seems suspiciously unlike any of the pigs on my family farm.

I’m with Serial on Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth. Unibrow and all. I was actually Google Image searching her the other night for some reason, so maybe she’s still the most beautiful woman in the world to me.

  10. bluzdude

Julie Newmar as Catwoman on the Batman TV show, no question. Even at 6 years old, I wanted to do things with her of which the SPCA would not approve.

  11. Angela

OH, I too was a huge miss piggy fan! I loved her! I remember my Mom getting me a 3D cake of miss piggy for my birthday and it melted on the drive home…ended up looking like today’s Mickey Rourke. :)

  12. Jadyn @ Dutch.British.Love

Awesome post as always! Mine were Mary Ingalls (I loved Laura but Mary was so pretty!), Dr. Quinn (you can see what kind of family I grew up in) and Lois from Lois and Clark. I even told people that I wanted my middle name to be Lois (I don’t have a middle name)…it seemed like a good idea at the time.
